This experimental series of images was inspired on three levels. First it is an attempt to emulate the results of Duchenne’s experiments in facial expressions, an exploration in duplicating the results without duplicating the process. Second it is an exploration of contemporary recognition – and revival – of the notion that certain facial expressions are indeed universal. Third it is an exploration of what it takes to project and capture such emotional expressions in the face of the dialectic between pre-modernist assumptions of transparency of the surface and post-modernist assumptions of fragmentation of the surface.  Instead of looking outside myself, I chose to look inward, to feel rather than see the emotional expressions.
